ADA mechanic visits the Ferrari factory in Italy

We’re always proud to see our AD Autocare team’s passion for engineering go beyond the workshop, and no one embodies that more than Kieran Dodds.

Kieran, who works in the family business alongside his mum and dad, was recently invited to Italy, to visit the Maranello Ferrari Factory, thanks to Shell Oil and LKQ.

A lifelong supercar enthusiast, Kieran has spent the past four years gaining hands-on experience with some of the world’s most desirable cars, from Ferraris to McLarens, all before the age of 21.

This wasn’t Kieran’s first memorable encounter with the Prancing Horse, though. Back in 2017, when he was just 13 years old, he attended Ferrari’s 70th Anniversary celebrations in Edinburgh — an incredible event that brought together dozens of Ferraris and enthusiasts from around the world. During the celebrations, Kieran had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to sit inside a LaFerrari, the brand’s flagship hypercar, sparking a profound admiration for Ferrari’s engineering excellence and design heritage.

During his visit to Maranello, he had the opportunity to see Ferrari’s build process up close, explore the F1 team’s operations, and witness first-hand the precision and craftsmanship that define the brand. The Ferrari visit included the trophy room, the models, and, of course, the shop. Kieran had to purchase some souvenirs, but the biggest laugh was when he actually bought two McLaren F1 models. The Ferrari guides thought it was absolutely hilarious. Clearly, Kieran has a sense of humour (and a love for all supercars).

Kieran made the most of the experience — asking insightful questions, meeting inspiring people, and even enjoying a meal in the Ferrari restaurant, surrounded by automotive history and innovation.

AdBlue is a specially formulated liquid used in modern diesel vehicles to reduce harmful emissions. It’s not a fuel additive, but rather a separate fluid that helps to break down nitrogen oxides (NOx) – gases that contribute to air pollution and smog – into harmless nitrogen and water vapour.

Chemically, AdBlue is a mixture of 32.5% high-purity urea and 67.5% de-ionised water. It’s non-toxic, colourless, and safe to handle, although it can be mildly corrosive to some metals and surfaces. Therefore, it’s best to avoid spills and ensure you o nly use it in the AdBlue tank .

Environmental and legal importance of AdBlue

Using AdBlue correctly helps your vehicle meet emissions standards and reduce its environmental impact. It’s also a legal requirement for diesel vehicles fitted with SCR systems to have sufficient AdBlue—driving without it can result in your engine not restarting or failing an MOT emissions test.

How AdBlue works

AdBlue is used in vehicles fitted with a system called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). When driving, small amounts of AdBlue are injected into the exhaust gases before they pass through the SCR catalyst. When you book your car into our Ayr car garage , we will use your registration number to order the correct parts for your vehicle’s make and model and provide you with a quote.

The difference between genuine and OEM parts

There are two types of car parts available at Andrew Dodds Autocare: genuine or OEM. We never buy or fit cheap aftermarket parts.

Genuine car parts

Genuine car parts — the best choice for cars under warranty — are what the vehicle manufacturer (i.e. Toyota, BMW, Ford, etc.) installed in your car originally. If your car is still under warranty, we will only use genuine parts, never OEM parts. If your car has exceeded its warranty, we will only use genuine parts if you have specified them. Otherwise, we will use certified OEM parts.

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)

OEM parts are made by the same companies that produce genuine parts for the manufacturer, but are sold under a different brand. These parts are identical to genuine parts in terms of quality and fit, but they come in different packaging and are usually more affordable.

Well-known companies like Bosch, Brembo, and MANN-FILTER manufacture OEM parts that meet manufacturer standards. They will be cheaper than genuine parts, but they may void your car’s warranty — we will always double-check this and only use them if your car has exceeded the warranty. Otherwise, they will also offer excellent fit, performance, and durability.

Why using genuine or OEM parts matters

While genuine and OEM parts may be more expensive, they can be the best decision in the long run. First of all, they are safer and more reliable, so your vehicle operates as it is intended. You’ll likely experience fewer malfunctions, lowering the risk of things going wrong while driving.

What OEM parts does Andrew Dodds Autocare use?

While we offer genuine parts if your car is under warranty or you’ve specifically requested it, in all other cases, we use certified OEM parts. The brands we trust and use include Bosch, Brembo, Pagid, MANN-FILTERS, Castrol and Shell.

It’s important for us to use well-known manufacturers with good reviews and industry certifications. For example, many Audi, BMW, and Mercedes parts originally came from Brembo, making the replacement parts identical to the original genuine parts.

We can’t say thank you enough to everyone who came along to the AD Autocare rally preview, and to the Craufurdland rally festival to support us. We would also love to say a special thank you to the incredible drivers who went above and beyond the call of duty.

It will come as no surprise that the Dodds family have rally driving in their genes, so hosting these famous rally drivers was not just a pleasure, but a privilege.

Not only did our VIPs sign autographs and spend quality time with their fans — including the enthusiastic youngsters who came along to share in the experience — but they also took the time to demonstrate some of the rally vehicles on display. To top it all off, they rolled up their sleeves and helped us take down our tent at the end of the event, showcasing their dedication and humility. Andrew Dodds Autocare is delighted to be an official sponsor of the Lombard Rally Festival , taking place at Craufurdland Castle on August 23 and 24, 2025.

After a successful Scottish debut last year, the Rally Festival will welcome back Finnish race car driver, Harri Toivonen, alongside Harri Rovanperä, Harald Demuth, and David Llewellin, former UK champion. Approximately 60 historic rally cars will be showcased on the specially constructed, period-style rally stage. Join us to see cars in action, hear interviews with hero rally drivers, take a tour of the cars on Saturday, and attend a static classic and sports car show on Sunday.

Competitive rallies used to take place in forests, making it difficult for the public to attend. In 1977, this transitioned to spectator stages. The Lombard Rally Festival recreates this atmosphere, tapping into what was once the largest-attended sporting event in the United Kingdom while making it accessible to the public today.

What is nitrogen tyre inflation?

Nitrogen is a type of gas. In fact, it's pretty much everywhere in the Earth's atmosphere. Nitrogen tyre inflation is the process of using nitrogen for your tyres instead of compressed air.

Nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules, meaning they can keep tyres inflated for longer. It's also a dry gas that can reduce energy build-up within your tyres and doesn't cause rust or react with other metals.

Regular compressed air is already about 78 per cent nitrogen, but pure nitrogen is even better.

The benefits of pure nitrogen tyre inflation

Why is nitrogen even better for your tyres than compressed air?

> Slow pressure loss

When we fill your tyres with nitrogen, the pressure loss slows by about 40 per cent. Nitrogen leaks less than normal air (because the molecules are larger), which ensures your tyres keep their pressure for longer. You'll experience better tyre performance, a safer drive, and improved fuel efficiency.

> Minimises vapour and fluctuating air pressure

Internal water vapour isn't good for tyres. Because nitrogen gas is very dry, it can minimise fluctuating air pressure that occurs with temperature changes, making it easier to maintain the correct tyre pressure.

> Less tyre degradation

Nitrogen tyre inflation reduces the rate of the thermo-oxidative process. In simple terms, nitrogen slows the process of heat and oxygen damaging the inside of the tyre. This helps the tyre remain in good condition and it prevents the degradation of rubber over time.

Compressed air, composed of around 22 per cent oxygen, can react with the rubber as it diffuses through it, causing tyre degradation.

Nitrogen-filled tyres can improve your vehicle's grip and braking ability, making it safer to drive. Nitrogen ensures optimum tread depth, so your tyres grip the road better, improving your vehicle's control.

There is a small charge for nitrogen inflation; if it doesn’t suit your budget, we will use compressed air instead.

What if my tyres already have air in them?

If your tyres have air in them already, don't worry about putting nitrogen in them. There is no risk of damage. However, if you bring your tyres to us for nitrogen, we will remove all compressed air first so that you have 100 per cent pure nitrogen in your tyres.

If you need to top up your tyres with regular compressed air at a later time, you can do so, even if you've had nitrogen inflation with us.

Driving in the winter can be a daunting experience, but you can make your journey smoother by preparing your vehicle for the colder months. Not only does this keep you and your passengers safer, but it also makes sure your car stays in good condition.

Whether you're an experienced driver or it's your first season on the UK roads, our comprehensive guide will walk you through the steps you need to take to prepare your car for winter.

Get a grip and check your tyres

Your tyres are your car’s only point of contact with the road. It's essential that they are ready for slippery, icy, and wet surfaces.

Tyre tread

The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6 mm, but for winter driving, Andrew Dodds Autocare recommends at least 3 mm for better traction on wet or icy roads. You can check your tread depth with a 20p coin. If the coin's outer band is visible when inserted into the tread, the tread isn't deep enough, and it’s time for a new tyre.

Winter or all-season tyres

Andrew Dodds Autocare encourages all-season tyres for the winter months. You can also opt for winter tyres, but they aren't legally required in the UK. However, they will make a noticeable difference when driving in wet, snowy, or icy conditions. Designed with softer rubber compounds and deeper treads, they improve grip in temperatures below 7°C.

Tyre pressure

Cold air causes tyre pressure to drop, which can lead to less control. Check your tyre pressure often and inflate it according to your vehicle’s manufacturer’s guidelines. These are located in your owner's manual or inside the driver’s door frame.

Over time, it can become diluted or less effective, so it’s important to check the level and condition before winter sets in. You can easily check this with an antifreeze tester, which will show if it’s strong enough for winter temperatures. If it needs topping up, make sure you're using the correct type of antifreeze for your car.

Windscreen washer fluid

Screen wash is essential in winter, especially with the extra road grime, salt, and debris. Make sure to use a winter-grade washer fluid with antifreeze to prevent your washer fluid from freezing in the tank or on the windscreen.

Engine oil

Ensure your vehicle goes for regular services to make sure your engine oil is topped up effectively. At Andrew Dodds Autocare, we always use the appropriate grade for each individual vehicle.

At the event in late summer, more than 50 historic rally cars will take the stage, designed to look like an authentic 1970s and 80s rally. These are not just static displays, but actual rally cars in action. Previous champions will be taking part, driving cars, and sharing stories of their time as rally drivers. This event gives car fanatics a unique chance to witness these cars, which are now out of action for competitive rallying.

Tyre troubles: Why part-worn spells trouble for your insurance

Did you know that part-worn tyres can void your car insurance? Second-hand tyres might seem like a good, budget-friendly idea at the time, but quality tyres are essential. Not only for your car insurance but also for road safety.

At Andrew Dodds Autocare , your local car garage in Ayr, we want to keep you informed so that you can rely on a fully insured and safe vehicle.

What is a part-worn tyre?

A part-worn tyre is a second-hand tyre that has the potential to be reused. They are usually taken from cars that are getting new tyres fitted. Most part-worn tyres are imported from Germany. In Germany, the legal minimum tread depth is 3 mm, while in the UK, it is 1.6 mm. German drivers, therefore, change their tyres earlier than we do, and these tyres are sent over to the UK to be resold.

In our experience, the majority of illegally sold part-worn tyres come from salvage yards. They are typically off of accident-damaged cars, meaning that they are unsafe to drive.

Understanding the risks of part-worn tyres

About 98% of part-worn tyres circulating in the UK fail to comply with proper regulations ⁽¹⁾ . And a whopping 34% are dangerous for driving. These alarming statistics mean that most part-worn tyres are technically sold illegally.

Not only can using part-worn, re-treaded, or remoulded tyres lead to life-threatening defects, but it can also result in insurance companies not being liable for any injury, loss, or damage.

If you have part-worn tyres and get into an accident, your insurance company might not accept your claim. It's essential to maintain your vehicle with safe components. Unfortunately, using tyres that don't meet safety standards falls outside these parameters.

Are part-worn tyres safe?

In most cases, part-worn tyres are unsafe. They have a lower tread depth and are often sold by second-hand car dealers or salvage yards who don't perform the necessary legal requirements.

Sometimes, part-worn tyres are sold legally and undergo thorough checks. A part-worn tyre that has undergone proper checks and not been re-treaded must have an 'E' marking. The words 'PART-WORN' must be clearly printed onto the tyre in letters at least 4 mm high.

You should also look out for certain features to ensure the part-worn tyre is safe:

The structural integrity of the tyre should be intact, and it shouldn't have cuts longer than 25 mm.
The original grooves should be fully visible and at least 2 mm deep across the tread's breadth and around the tyre's circumference.
There should be no lumps or bulges internally or externally.
The ply or cord shouldn't be exposed internally or externally.
