What is an MOT?

An MOT (Ministry of Transport) is a mandatory annual test for your car. It’s like a health check for your vehicle. Our mechanics conduct a thorough examination of your car to make sure that it’s safe and roadworthy.

During the test, they will inspect your vehicle's brakes, mirrors, windscreen wipers, lights, exhaust, and more to ensure it meets the governing safety and environmental standards. If your car is fit for the road, it will pass its MOT.

However, if the vehicle fails, repairs may be necessary. This will ensure safety for you, other drivers, and the environment.

To avoid your car failing its MOT, check out our post about common MOT failures and how to avoid them.

Do I need a car MOT?

If your vehicle is three years old or older, an MOT test certificate is a legal requirement.

You must renew this certificate every year. Driving your car on the road without a valid MOT certificate is illegal. Also, you will need a valid MOT certificate to renew your road tax.

Driving a car without a valid MOT certificate can result in a fine of up to £1,000 and your insurance could be void. The DVSA uses a computerised MOT test system with mobile camera units and police patrols. This remotely verifies whether your vehicle has a valid certificate.

Note: You are allowed to drive your vehicle to an MOT centre without an MOT certificate. But if the police stop you, make sure you have valid proof of your appointment.

When is my MOT due?

Look at your current MOT test certificate to determine when it expires. If you are unable to find it, check the MOT history and status on the UK Government Status page at www.gov.uk/check-mot-status where you will find the expiry date of your MOT and the date your car tax is due.

How long does an MOT take?

An MOT typically takes around one hour.

We will give you an hour's time slot so you can return when we've finished. Alternatively, feel free to drop your vehicle off in the morning and pick it up later in the day. You’re also welcome to wait in our Ayr garage while our mechanics carry out your MOT.

Keep in mind that if your vehicle needs repairs, this process will take longer.

Can I get my MOT early?

You can book your MOT check up to one month (minus a day) before it expires, and you can keep the same renewal date.

For example, if your MOT is due July 9, you can book your MOT any time from June 10. The following year, the MOT will still be due July 9.

To avoid any potential issues with an expired MOT, it's best to book your MOT in advance. This gives us time to repair any issues and ensure your vehicle is roadworthy and in good condition before your MOT expires. By booking your MOT in advance, you can feel confident that your car is in good condition and prepared for driving.
