How Often Should You Service Your Car? A Comprehensive Guide

Dec 05, 2023

A regular car service is crucial for protecting your car and reducing the chances of breakdowns. We suggest getting regular service for all types of cars, taxis, campervans, and ambulances, regardless of fuel type.

But how often should you service your car? This is an important (and slightly complex) question, but we’re here to break it down for you.

How often should you service your car?

As a general rule of thumb, you should get a full car service every 24-36 months or 24,000-36,000 miles, whichever comes first.

To check your car service history, refer to your service book, which your most recent mechanic should have updated.

Although an annual service is standard, there are three types of services. We’ll explain them in detail and guide you on how often to consider each one.

Keep in mind that the frequency is a general recommendation. You should always check with your car manufacturer. If you're unsure, call us and tell us your car's make and model. Your local garage will guide you.

Our team will carry out a vehicle health check whilst your car is on the ramp and report any issues found during the examination.

Factors that influence service frequency.

We recommend certain services at various frequencies. However, many factors can affect how often you get your vehicle serviced. This includes:

  • Manufacturer’s recommendations
Check your owner’s manual for specific frequency recommendations.

  • Type of driving
If you drive for short periods through cities, your car may need servicing more often than someone who drives mostly motorways.

  • Mileage
The more miles you drive, the more often you should service your vehicle.

  • Car age
Older vehicles may need more frequent servicing to keep up with wear and tear. Newer cars may be able to go longer between services.

  • Climate and weather
If you live somewhere extremely cold or hot, your car may need more frequent services. This is because of increased use of the air conditioning and heating.

If you are unsure, call Andrew Dodds Autocare, and we will guide you on how often to service your exact make and model of vehicle. We are a local independent garage in Ayr with a range of qualified mechanics and experts who are always happy to help. Not only do we provide services to cars and taxis, but we also provide electric hybrid car services. We also have a lovely waiting area stocked with toys to keep little ones occupied.

Signs your car needs an immediate service.

Keep a log of the last time your car had a service and try to book a car service regularly. Some cars will also inculcate when the service is due by showing a warning light on the dashboard.

Other signs that your car needs a service include:

  • Loss in power.
  • Leaking water through the aircon or exhaust unit.
  • Frequent stalling.
  • Strange noises, like clicks, hissing or ticking.
  • Brakes work differently, such as you need to apply more pressure.
  • Unusual vibrations or juddering.
  • Smoke from the bonnet or exhaust.

If you notice any of these, give us a call right away, and we will book you in for a service as soon as possible.

Benefits of regular servicing.

Booking your car in for an annual service contributes to the overall health, performance and longevity of your vehicle.

Regular car servicing also ensures your car’s safety. At Andrew Dodds Autocare, a service lets us spot potential safety issues, especially with your brakes and tyres. Then we can ensure they are in the best condition.

Car services also increase fuel efficiency since well-maintained vehicles operate better, improving fuel economy. This saves you money over time.

Other benefits include:

  • Optimal vehicle performance.
  • Fewer emissions.
  • Maintained resale value.
  • Compliance with warranty requirements.
  • Brake efficiency and safety.
  • Optimised cooling system.
  • Lower repair costs.
  • Peace of mind.

Frequently asked questions.

  • Should I ignore my car service?

When you get a warning light, or it’s been 12,000 miles since the last service, don’t skip your car service. Ignoring your vehicle service can have negative consequences. Not checking for damage early can be dangerous for both your car and you. Additionally, you might miss opportunities to fix problems before they become expensive.

Something to note: A car service isn’t a legal requirement, unlike an MOT. You don’t need to service your car, but in our professional opinion, a vehicle service is essential.

  • Do I need to empty my car for a service?

We recommend removing personal belongings from your vehicle when you take it to a service centre. It’s also helpful if you empty your boot so we can access your spare tyre, which we will also inspect.

  • Should I service my car even if I don't drive it?

Yes, car owners should still service their vehicles if they don't drive them. Even if your car sits idle in the driveway for extended periods, it can still wear down. Fluids, including brake and coolant, can deteriorate, even in stationary vehicles.

The battery health can also discharge, especially in extreme temperatures. Tyres can develop flat spots, so regular servicing can check the pressure and spot damage.

A service can also check the brakes, HVAC system, starter motor, alternator, and rubber belts. These components can all be affected, even when a car isn’t in use.

  • What maintenance should I do to my car?

Between services, you should perform DIY checks. This includes:

    • Checking fluid levels.
    • Inspecting and inflating tyres.
    • Monitoring the air filter.
    • Inspecting the battery.
    • Inspecting belts and hoses.
    • Testing lights.
    • Cleaning wiper blades.
    • Inspecting brakes
  • What does a full service include on a car?

A full service at our local car garage in Ayr includes many critical checks on your vehicle. We always refer to your manufacturer’s recommendations to ensure we deliver the best service possible for your vehicle.

A full service generally includes an oil and filter change, a transmission fluid check, and an exhaust system check. We also look at your exterior lights, air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs, brake system, and your engine bay.

  • How much is a car service?

A car service cost depends on your car's make and model and which service you choose. Give us a phone, and we will provide an accurate quote.
